Owning a business takes a more than an idea and a social media following. It takes a lot of grit, hustle and hard work. The days can be tough, but the payoff can be big. Having a source of income and cash flow is nice, but the reality of making something entirely your own is priceless. For me, the best part about having a business is sharing something with the world that I am proud of creating. My business is 100% all me. There’s no one else behind the curtain (with the exception of an amazing virtual assistant!). Everything you see on this site and on my social media started as just a thought in my head. With the things I create and the people I meet through my business, I have a lot to be excited about. I don’t share that to be boastful or anything like that, but to share how far I’ve come. When you start a business, most times, you start with nothing. It is all about building your brand.
Venturing out into the world of entrepreneurship can be a scary leap of faith, but that’s what it takes. A little bit of faith and a lot of work. The late nights and long hours can be hard at first. Juggling life and career can get difficult, but when I book a wedding client or sell a mug from my shop – I do a little happy dance, and it is all worth it.
Building Something Great
I am building a business and brand for more than just myself, but for my family. If you’ve been a reader for a while, you’ll know that when I first got pregnant, I wanted to make sure I was more than “just a mom”. Some women revel in the mom title, but I knew from the very beginning that there is more that defines me and having my business is a part of that. I want my son to see me as a business woman, a wife, and a mom. It is a good feeling being able to do something I love for those I love the most. It indeed is a driving factor in what I do on a daily basis! The 3 pm cup of caffeine helps with my motivation too, if I am honest!
If you have ever thought about starting your own business or company, I challenge you to think about the big picture and the longevity of your dream. How are you going to grow and develop as a person by starting this business? Are you excited about the person you may become because of it all?
Creating a Positive Impact
This line of work can bring out the best and worst of people. Competition can get intense, and there will always be someone out there trying to get after what you have. It can be distracting and intimidating, but you must focus on you. Put on those blinders and get back at it. Social media can also create the feeling of “impostor syndrome” and the feeling of inadequacy. It’s important to remember that what we see on Instagram or Facebook isn’t the whole truth and someone’s “success” might not be what it seems. We all reach our destination in our own time.
I think being a boss babe means that you are someone that creates a community of support and encouragement. If you see another babe out there hustling hard, tell her that you see her putting in the work! You never know how that can impact them. No matter where you are in your story to success, you can relate to someone who is in a season that you just came out of and conquered. Share your wisdom and lift someone up. It will come back to you tenfold. Everyone could use a little bit of good karma, amirite?
How do I get started
Hi LaDonna! That’s such a great questions! The first thing you want to do is make sure you have a product or service that is filling a need. You’ll want to make sure you you’ve researched who your target clients are and pricing yourself so that you’re competitive within your market so you aren’t pulling others in your industry down! I’ll be having a series on starting a business soon so make sure to check back!
