Dating your partner when you have limited time is always a challenge that definitely doesn’t get easier the longer you’ve been together! The hubs and I have been together almost 17 years, and now with a little one, making time for each other has been come harder. If you follow along on my weekly IGTV series – Goal Digger, you’ll know that I’ve made it a priority to find ways to incorporate dating my husband into my marriage. Here are a few tricks that I’ve found work for us!
Put it on the calendar
A lot of couples hate to pre-plan dates because they feel like it takes the spontaneity out of the relationship. I’ve found that actually scheduling a date and having it on our shared calendar, gives us both something to look forward to. It helps get our minds prepped for spending time together. We try to have date night at least twice a month. Most of the time we’ll block off a day even if we haven’t figured out what we’re going to do. Having it on the calendar means we’ve made it a priority so we’ll make sure to have that time together.
Create a date jar
Creating a date jar can help take the guess work out of those “what are we going to do” moments. One January goal was to create a date jar that would help us plan our dates. Pick categories like low spend/high spend or home/going-out. Then just pick a stick! It makes planning what to do so much easier.
Take turns with planning
It can be a lot for one person to always feel like they are planning something to do. After you make your date jar, take turns picking for it and planning your dates. It’s much easier to plan one date night a month than two. This will give your partner a chance to feel like they are the ones been “taken out”.
Keep it simple
Sometimes it’s just impossible to make it out of the house. Whether it’s the fact that you can’t find a babysitter or you’re just trying to save some money, dates don’t have to be expensive. Sometimes the best “dates” the hubs and I have are when we put our son to bed, pop some popcorn, and find a Netflix movie we’ll both enjoy.
Dating your spouse is so important because it give you the chance to reconnect with that person you fell in love with. When we get caught up in our day-to-day lives, we sometimes forget that there’s that other person there that is looking for love and attention. If you’re a parent, even having conversations that don’t center around your kids can be a challenge! But ultimately, making time for each other helps to remind you why you’re together in the first place and have some fun in the process.
